Go Readers!!!

Mr. Ogden in the 6th grade.
Proof that I am really not from
a different planet. I'm smiling
because I just read a book...and yes,
those are my ears.
Parents,
In addition to this web site, the school purchased a new phone system that will allow you to call in to leave messages, or find out about homework or other important class information. Simply call the school, wait for the friendly recorded voice, and input the extension number 2116.

Welcome to Lakeside!
Welcome to a new school year at Lakeside. Remember, I am a part of all that I have read. When you look at common ingredients to success in this world, reading is singularly important, and in order to become a successful reader you must practice. To become a better ball player or to succeed in ballet, one must practice. Learn to turn off that TV or video game and discover the wonder literature has to offer.
Dear Parents,
I invite you to call or visit if you have any questions about the class. On the first day of school I will send home class information that I would like you to read and sign. These will be inside of your student's grammar tech manual, a folder containing information students will use all year. Key items to remember:
I issue an academic progress report to every student every Friday. This will show each assignment and assigned grade for the subjects spelling, reading, language. Ask your son or daughter to see this.
For reading classes I write the assignments and due dates for the whole week on the board every Monday. Students write this information in their homework notebooks on Monday morning.
Math class assignments are done on a daily schedule.
Helpful hint of the week: Turn
off the TV!!!
"Mom, the TV blew up. I'm free!"
READ A BOOK.
WRITE A LETTER.
WRITE A POEM.
LISTEN TO MUSIC. CHOPIN?

Assignments for this week: 8/18/08
1st quarter
Note about assignments: All students write down their assignments in their planning books purchased here at school. Every Monday I write the homework on the board. It is there all week. This site serves as a reminder and resource for parents.
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!!
PERIOD 1&2, 3&5, 6&7 LANGUAGE ARTS
Required Textbooks and workbooks for class:
Textbook-Prentice Hall Literature(a large orange book)
Selection Support- A workbook that goes with the text(a brown book)
Spelling Workbook-Spelling( a green book)
A Grammar Tech Notebook- A folder that they write information in for the year.
SPELLING-No assignment this week.
The spelling book is green. Tear out pages you will need for the week and bring them to class. That way you will not have to carry the book around unless you want to skip your daily routine at Family Fitness. Complete these pages and turn in on Friday.
LANGUAGE-
DOL-due Wednesday.
Know the rules of grammar! Only sentences 1-10 this week. This is a sheet I will hand out Monday. Students rewrite 10 sentences on binder paper. Pay attention to the rules on the left side of each sentence. This will give you clues as to errors. Be careful. Each error is two points. We will be discussing these rules all year long and writing about them in our grammar tech manual. There's no mystery about grammar. Just like your times tables, you just have to know and study them. This is due Wednesday or before. Try to finish it in class.
Writing- This week and next week's focus will be on the paragraph and outlining. We will discuss the parts of a proper paragraph and practice writing in class. We will begin by writing our paragraphs for the "ME" project In class I will describe the rules of outlining and we will outline the story "Time of Summer Running."
READING-
The Sound of Summer Running. pgs. 4-14 (The Orange book). This story will serve as a benchmark to gauge how students read on their own. They should read this at home. On Thursday I will give them the benchmark test. Then we will discuss the story and I will show them how to complete Cornell Notes and a Laws sheet. On Friday I will give them the same test.
We will read this in class, but I want you to read this at home too. Students will read this in class and will also complete Cornell notes. The reading test is this Friday.
Remember that your tests are based on the story, the vocabulary words at the beginning of each story, and on the Selection Support pages in your brown workbook. (Selection Support)
Selection Support Pages 1-3 (The Brown Book)- Most of this will be finished in class, but remember you are responsible for completing this if you do not finish it.
Due Friday

COMPUTER LAB-Not open this week.
Library- Not this week.

AR Note: for the first part of the quarter I will provide their first AR book. Most students will be reading Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe. They will read it at the beginning of class during silent reading.
Don't fall behind!!!!
Projects: "Me" project- This is a project that will cover the next few weeks. It will include a poster that consists of paragraphs and a collage of pictures. We will also write an outline, autobiography, and create a PowerPoint presentation.
Me Poster due: September 3. I will discuss this in class and hand out an informational sheet the first week of the year.
Outline: This will be due the following week.
Autobiography- An essay about your life. Be sure to follow your outline. Due at the same time as the outline, and students will create a PowerPoint presentation based on their outline and essay. They will present their PowerPoint to the class.
