Welcome to a new school year at Lakeside. Remember, I am a part of all that I have read. When you look at common ingredients to success in this world, reading is singularly important, and in order to become a successful reader you must practice. To become a better ball player or to succeed in ballet, one must practice. Learn to turn off that TV or video game and discover the wonder literature has to offer. Dear Parents, I invite you to call or visit if you have any questions about the class. On the first day of school I will send home class information that I would like you to read and sign. These will be inside of your student's grammar tech manual, a folder containing information students will use all year. Key items to remember:
Weekly Progress Reports !!!!
I issue an academic progress report to every student every Friday. This will show each assignment and assigned grade for the subjects spelling, reading, language, and language. Ask your son or daughter to see this. For reading classes I write the assignments and due dates for the whole week on the board every Monday. Students write this information in their homework notebooks on Monday morning.

Note about assignments: All students write down their assignments in their planning books purchased here at school. Every Monday I write the homework on the board. It is there all week. This site serves as a reminder and resorce for parents.
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS
1&2, 5&6 PERIODS
SPELLING- Lesson 1 Complete pages 14-17. Green Book. Write each word 3x. Use each in a sentence. Due Friday.
LANGUAGE- DOL - 1-10, due Wednesday. Rewrite each sentence on binder paper. Know the rules of grammar! DOL is a sheet I will hand out Monday. Students rewrite 10 sentences on binder paper. Pay attention to the rules on the left side of each sentence. This will give you clues as to errors. Be careful. Each error is two points. We will be discussing these rules all year long and writing about them in our grammar tech manual. There's no mystery about grammar. Just like your times tables, you just have to know and study them. This is due Wednesday or before. Try to finish it in class.

READING- "Sound of Summer Running" continued. Read pages 4-14
Test on story- Friday
Cornell Notes: due Friday. We will discuss this in class.
We will read this in class, but I want you to read this at home too. Test Friday.
Remember to study for your test. The test is based on your vocabulary, information in your Selection Support, the story, and questions at the end of the story.

AR-Read every night!!!
Don't forget AR!!! This is 10 percent of your grade. Look each Friday at your report to see your current AR percent. Don't wait to the last minute because it will affect your reading grade significantly. Read your library books at home, take a test here in the computer lab.
Computer Lab and Writing:Tuesday. Star test to determine AR levels. Typing. Formatting handout due next week. Learning the basic skills of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. If time allows begins typing autobiography outline.
Topics and Standards addressed this week: paragraphing, outlining, multiparagraph essays, anecdotes and narratives.
The three books:
Oranges-an orange textbook
Limes-A Spelling workbook (a green book)
Potatoes-Selection Support Workbook (a brown book). A book that supports the orange textbook.
Supplies:paper, pencils, pens, red pen, colored pencils or crayons, and optional flash drive (memory stick).

Review. Quiz on section 1 and 2.

What is HTM?- History Tech Manuals- Students write in these every day. We will make these the first and second day of school. Students record BVNS.
What is BVNS? Bellringer, Vocabulary, Notes, and Summary. Each day students will divide a piece of binder paper inside of their HTM into 4 sections-BVNS. At the beginning of class students will see an activity that they will work on quietly (bellringer). As the period progresses they will write and define their Vocabulary words, take Notes on either the reading or PowerPoint, and finally Summarize for the day.
Computers in the Classroom
Guitar 
PERIOD 8- GUITAR/STUDY HALL
Students can drop off their guitars in my class in the morning, but they must be taken home the same day. Thank you, Glen Ogden.
Students will bring their guitars Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. On Wednesday and Thursday the school has tutoring.
Study Hall: All students must come prepared to study hall. You will need your homework or an AR book. This is a time to study and complete your homework not to talk. Guitar: Those of you who are taking lessons in guitar must have these items: Guitar and case Optional electronic tuner. You can purchase these at any music store for as little as $14. I will issue each of you a workbook and music to study. Try to practice at least three times a week. 10-20 minutes a night is fine. Turn the TV off. Live a little.
