Welcome to Lakeside!

Welcome to a new school year at Lakeside. Remember, I am a part of all that I have read. When you look at common ingredients to success in this world, reading is singularly important, and in order to become a successful reader you must practice. To become a better ball player or to succeed in ballet, one must practice. Learn to turn off that TV or video game and discover the wonder literature has to offer.

Dear Parents,

I invite you to call or visit if you have any questions about the class. On the first day of school I will send home class information that I would like you to read and sign. These will be inside of your student's grammar tech manual, a folder containing information students will use all year. Key items to remember:

I issue an academic progress report to every student every Friday. This will show each assignment and assigned grade for the subjects spelling, reading, language. Ask your son or daughter to see this.

For reading classes I write the assignments and due dates for the whole week on the board every Monday. Students write this information in their homework notebooks on Monday morning.

Math class assignments are done on a daily schedule.

1st quarter

Note about assignments: All students write down their assignments in their planning books purchased here at school. Every Monday I write the homework on the board. It is there all week. This site serves as a reminder and resource for parents.

PERIOD 1&2, 3&5, 6&7 LANGUAGE ARTS

Required Textbooks and workbooks for class:

Textbook-Prentice Hall Literature(a large orange book)

Selection Support- A workbook that goes with the text(a brown book)

Spelling Workbook-Spelling( a green book)

A Grammar Tech Notebook- A folder that they write information in for the year.

An AR book

SPELLING-

The spelling book is green. Tear out pages 66-69, lesson 13. A review. Write each word 3x each. Write down your vocabulary words from the orange book and their definitions, use 12 of the words in sentences. Each sentence must have an indefinite pronoun. Look at your GTM for examples.

You will need these pages for the week. At the beginning of the week I will give you a copy of the first page. Be sure to bring them to class. That way you will not have to carry the book around unless you want to skip your daily routine at Family Fitness. Complete these pages and turn in on Friday.

LANGUAGE-

DOL-Know the rules of grammar! Only sentences 1-10 this week.This is a sheet I will hand out Monday. Students rewrite 10 sentences on binder paper. Pay attention to the rules on the left side of each sentence. This will give you clues as to errors. Be careful. Each error is two points. We will be discussing these rules all year long and writing about them in our grammar tech manual. There's no mystery about grammar. Just like your times tables, you just have to know and study them. This is due Wednesday or before. Try to finish it in class.

Writing-Typing of Business Letters,Book Report PowerPoints cont. and Your Wrinkle in Time Newsletters.

Book of Virtues Project. We will begin typing our rough drafts of our business letters in Computer Lab. You may of course, do this at home.

READING-

"Names, Nombres, Alone in the Nets, and Southpaw" pgs. 222-234 (The Orange book).

We will read this in class, but I want you to read this at home too. Students will read this in class and will also complete Cornell notes and a Laws sheet. The reading test is this Friday. Remember that your tests are based on the story, the vocabulary words at the beginning of each story, and on the Selection Support pages in your brown workbook. (Selection Support)

Selection Support Pages 71-73(The Brown Book)- Most of this will be finished in class, but remember you are responsible for completing this if you do not finish it.

Due Friday

In Class:

Finish presenting their book report PowerPoints in class. Typing of our Business Letters. LAWS sheet, Cornell Notes. Word Art for Spelling words.

Are you reading AR? Coming up after Thanksgiving-PowerPoint Book Report.

Supplies needed: pen, pencil, paper, optional memory stick (flash drive)?

COMPUTER LAB- Typing of business letter for part of the class.

Use the program Microsoft Publisher. Continue working on a newsletter that will be based on the novel Wrinkle in Time. As we read Wrinkle in Time, you are recording information as a newspaper reporter. You will take this information to write your articles for your newsletter. Your newsletter should be 4 pages long. This project will span 4 weeks.

I realize that many of you were new to the computer at the beginning of the quarter except for the occassional game. Now, however, you are becoming professional typers and formatters for different programs. I expect you to follow deadlines closely this quarter. Always be on task in lab.

Library- Thursday

Standards this week: Speaker 1st and 3rd, Simple, compound, and complex sentences. Recognizing meanings of frequently used foreign words. Use of word processing. Recognizing frequently misspelled words.

AR-READ EVERY NIGHT 10-20 MINUTES. REMEMBER, TRY TO REACH YOUR GOAL OF 100% AND BEYOND. THIS IS PART OF YOUR GRADE. IF YOU GO BEYOND YOUR GOAL OF 100% IT COUNTS AS EXTRA CREDIT. YOU MIGHT EVEN WIN A NEW CAR! We all like pizza!!!!

AR Note: for the first part of the quarter I will provide their first AR book. Most students will be reading Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe. They will read it at the beginning of class during silent reading.

PERIOD 8- GUITAR/STUDY HALL

Study Hall: All students must come prepared to study hall. You will need your homework or an AR book. This is a time to study and complete your homework not to talk.

Guitar: Those of you who are taking lessons in guitar must have these items:

Guitar and case

Optional electronic tuner. You can purchase these at any music store for as little as $14.

I will issue each of you a workbook and music to study. Try to practice at least three times a week. 10-20 minutes a night is fine. Turn the TV off. Live a little.
