Back to School

Dear Parent/Guardian,

My name is Mrs. Elena Rogers and I have been a primary teacher for fourteen years and have spent the last 3 years teaching second grade.  I have found second graders to be extremely enthusiastic about learning and I have enjoyed watching their academic skills develop.  During their second grade year, they gain independence for their work and develop personal responsibility.  I would like to welcome your child to room 706 and am looking forward to a great year!

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin- River Falls with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and a Minor in Early Childhood.  I also have a Master’s Degree in Reading/Language Arts from California State University- Bakersfield..

Here is some information to help us all get started:

HOMEWORK:  I will assign weekly homework packets that will be sent home every FRIDAY and will be due the following THURSDAY.  The weekly packets include the spelling list, story summary, phonics or grammar, writing, the poem of the week, math review , and a reading log to keep track of their independent reading.  Students are asked to read 15 minutes per day and record it onto their reading log each week.  Please check your child’s homework to make sure that it is complete, neat and that they are understanding the concept.

TEST SCHEDULE: Thursday- Spelling Tests

Friday- DLR Quizzes (Grammar) and Reading Tests

Math, Science, and Social Studies Tests will vary

CLASSROOM RULES:  The students will be helping me create our “Class Rules” during the first week of school.  They will look something like this:

1.          Listen Carefully

2.       Follow Directions

3.      Work Quietly

4.       Respect Others- be kind with your words and actions

5.       Work and Play Safely

CONSEQUENCES:  Every day students will start with their clips on Green (Ready To Learn) which will earn the grade of a “B” if their clip stays on that color all day so you know that they had a good day and did everything that they were supposed to do.  If a student is breaking the rules, I will first give the student a verbal warning so they have a chance to change their behavior (unless it is something severe).  If they continue to behave in this manner, then they will be told to “clip down” and be given a consequence each time they clip down.  Their “Conduct Grade” will reflect where your child’s clip is at the end of the day.  Students will record their grade each day on a Behavior Report and bring it home at the end of each week in their “Monster Binder

 Purple: “Awesome Day” A+

          Blue: “Outstanding Day” A

          Turquoise:  “Great Day” A-

Green: “Ready to Learn/Good Day” B

          Light Green: “Warning” B-

Lime Green:   “Time Out- 5 Minutes”  C

Yellow: “Time Out- Entire Recess” D
          Orange: “Teacher’s Choice” Punishment D

          Red: “Office/Phone Call Home” F

REWARDS:

         1.          Verbal praise and students will get to “clip up” on the Conduct Chart.

2.       Students “Conduct Card” will be punched and when it’s filled, they will get to choose a prize on Friday.

3.      Bobcat Hero: A Bobcat hero will be filled out for something outstanding and put into a jar in the office.  Each Friday, there will be a drawing and those chosen will get to go to the office for a prize.

4.       There will be class rewards for good behavior as well.

If you have any questions regarding my discipline plan or anything else, please let me know.  I hope we can work together in implementing this discipline plan in order to make my classroom a positive learning environment.  Look for their Behavior Report each Friday and discuss it with them at home.

MONSTER BINDER:

I am giving each child a three ringed binder that will have a place for homework, important papers, calendars and a place to communicate with each other.   There will be a zipper pouch in the front of the binder for your child’s Behavior Reports.  Please check your child’s binder on a daily basis.  If you write a note to me, please let your child know so they can hand it to me first thing in the morning.  Thanks!

SNACK TIME/WATER BOTTLES:

Sending a small, healthy morning snack is very important this year because we have a later lunch time than they had last year.  Also, I encourage you to send a water bottle with your child every day especially during the hot weather.  The water bottles should help us prevent heat related problems during the hot months.  The water bottles that have the spout that pulls up (rather than the removable cap) work best because most spills can be prevented..
