Understanding Student Transfers: Intra-District vs. Inter-District Permits

At Lakeside Union School District, we are committed to providing an exceptional education within a safe, nurturing environment. We understand that families sometimes need to request that their child attend a school other than their designated neighborhood school.

To help you navigate this process, here is a clear explanation of the two types of transfer request forms available to our families.

1. Intra-District Transfer Requests (Within LUSD)

An Intra-District Transfer is for families who live within the Lakeside Union School District boundaries but wish to enroll their child in a different LUSD school rather than their designated school of residence.

  • Who it is for: Students residing in the Lakeside Union School District boundaries.

  • Example: You live within LUSD boundaries and your neighborhood school is Lakeside School, but you would like your child to attend Donald E. Suburu School (or vice versa).

  • Key Considerations: Approval is subject to space availability and capacity limits at the requested school site. Parents/guardians are responsible for providing transportation to and from school.

2. Inter-District Transfer Requests (Between Districts)

An Inter-District Transfer is for families who want a student to cross district boundaries—either to enter Lakeside Union School District from another district, or to leave LUSD to attend school in a different district.

  • Who it is for:

    • Families who live outside the LUSD boundaries but wish for their child to attend an LUSD school.

    • Families who live within the LUSD boundaries but wish for their child to attend a school in a neighboring district.

  • The Process: Inter-district transfers require a multi-step approval process. You must first obtain a "release" permit from your school district of residence before the receiving school district can review and approve the request.

  • Agreement Terms: Once approved, students attending LUSD on an Inter-district permit must abide by the terms of the Parent-Student Interdistrict Attendance Contract, which requires maintaining good attendance, satisfactory grades (a 2.0 or "C" average), and appropriate behavior.
